Melbourne nurse Carol Friday, 68, and her 29-year-old son Greig, an engineer, were holidaying in Europe and were passengers on the Airbus A320 plane en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop released their names before Question Time in Federal Parliament.

The Australian nursing and midwifery federation paid tribute to Mrs Friday, a nurse and midwife who has worked in communities across Australia for more than 40 years. She celebrated her 68th birthday on Monday.

"She has nursed in Aboriginal outback Northern Territory, she has nursed in Queensland,” Paul Gilbert, a spokesman, told ABC News.

“She cared for the Kosovars when they came out here seeking asylum. She is one of those people who has just done everything."

Mr Friday, an acoustic engineer, had been living and working in Germany as part of an "adventure" year abroad.

"He was a lovely person, it sounds contrived, but he really was a genuinely lovely person and the workplace was better for having him a part of it," Sarah Alper, his former manager at an engineering firm, told The Age.

"When he left to pursue an adventure, we were really sad to see him go and hoped one day he would come back."

The family statement said: "Carol was a loving mother of two, a devoted wife to her husband, Dave, and a sister to three brothers. Greig was to turn 30 on April 23. He was a loving son to Carol and Dave and an exceptional brother to his sister, Alex. He was adored by all his family and friends.”

On 24 March 2015, the aircraft, an Airbus A320-200, crashed 100 kilometres (62 mi) northwest of Nice, in the French Alps, after a constant descent that began one minute after the last routine contact with air traffic control and shortly after the aircraft had reached its assigned cruise altitude. All 144 passengers and six crew members were killed.
