Joep Lange  

Joseph "Joep" Lange (1954 – 17 July 2014) was a clinical researcher from The Netherlands, specialising in HIV therapy who served as the President of International AIDS Society from 2002 to 2004. He was also the Founding Chairman of PharmAccess Foundation until his death on 17 July 2014.

Biography

He was born in Nieuwenhagen and studied at the the University of Amsterdam, receiving his M.D. in 1981 and his PhD in 1987. In 2006 he became Professor of Medicine at the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam and Senior Scientific Advisor to the International Antiviral Therapy Evaluation Centre, Amsterdam. He was also co-director of the HIV Netherlands Australia Research Collaboration (HIV-NAT), based in Thailand. Lange also served on Accordia Global Health Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board.

In 2001, he founded the PharmAccess Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation based in Amsterdam which aims to improve access to HIV/AIDS therapy in developing countries and served as Chairman until his death. Lange was a former president of the International AIDS Society (2002–04). Lange was also the Scientific Director of HIV[e]Ducation, an online learning system for medical doctors, nurses and counsellors working with HIV-positive people. He was also a founding editor of the academic journal, Antiviral Therapy.

He was member of several societies including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Microbiology and International AIDS Society.

Lange and his partner Jacqueline van Tongeren were passengers on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 which was shot down near Hrabove, Ukraine, on 17 July 2014. He was en-route to Melbourne to attend 20th International AIDS Conference, starting on July 19.

oep Lange is Professor of Medicine, Head of the Department of Global Health, at the Academic Medical Center (AMC), University of Amsterdam, Executive Scientific Director of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD), Chair of the Steering Committee AIGHD.

Joep Lange has been involved in HIV research and treatment since 1983. He has been the architect and principal investigator of several pivotal trials on antiretroviral therapy and on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in both the developed and developing world.

In addition to various positions at the AMC, he was Chief of Clinical Research and Drug Development at the Global Programme on AIDS of the World Health Organization in Geneva from 1992 to 1995.

From 2002–2004 he was President of the International AIDS Society. He serves or has served on numerous advisory boards for both private and public sector organisations, including the Strategic and Technical Advisory Committee of the WHO HIV Department, the External Advisory Committee of the US HIV Vaccine Trials Network and the International Advisory Board of the Institute for Global Health of Imperial College.

He also serves as the Chairman of the PharmAccess Foundation (which he founded) and as Scientific Advisor to the Board of the Health Insurance Fund Foundation, which pioneers mechanisms of sustainable financing of health care in resource-poor settings. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation. Joep Lange founded and is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Antiviral Therapy and has served on several other editorial boards of scientific journals. He has published more than 350 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has guided more than 30 PhD students. In 2007 he was awarded the Eijkman medal for his achievements in Tropical Medicine and International Health.
