Arwid Ivanovich Kubbel

Arwid Kubbel
Arwid Ivanovich Kubbel (Russian: Арвид Иванович Куббель; * 12 November 1889 in Saint Petersburg; † 11 January 1938 in Leningrad) was a Soviet chess player.

Arwid was a brother of Yevgeny and Leonid Kubbel. In October 1920, he took part in the first All-Russian Championship in Moscow. He published around 500 compositions of the Bohemian School, mainly three-move pieces. During Stalin's purges, he was arrested on 21 November 1937 and shot on 11 January 1938. The arrest was kept secret and later the false report was spread that he had died of nephritis in a Siberian gulag.

His best historical Elo rating was 2598 in December 1925, which would have placed him 20th in the subsequently calculated world rankings.
