Alexei Andreyevich Tupolev (Russian: Алексе́й Андре́евич Ту́полев; May 20, 1925–May 12, 2001) was a Soviet aircraft designer who led the development of the first supersonic passenger jet, the Tupolev Tu-144. He also helped design the Buran space shuttle and the Tu-2000, which has been suspended because of the lack of funds.

Tupolev was the son of famed Soviet aircraft pioneer, Andrei Tupolev. He graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute in 1949 and began working with his father at the Tupolev Design Bureau. He became chief designer in 1963 and general designer in 1973.

The prototype first flew on 31 December 1968 near Moscow, two months before the first flight of Concorde. The Tu-144 first went supersonic on 5 June 1969, and on 26 May 1970 became the first commercial transport to exceed Mach2. The frequent comparisons to Concorde led to the Tu-144 being known as "Concordski" in the West.
