Ayman Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri was an Egyptian-born Islamic jihadist and terrorist.
After the September 11 attacks, the United States Department of State offered a US$25 million reward for information or intelligence leading to al-Zawahiri's capture. He became the leader of al-Qaeda in June 2011, succeeding Osama bin Laden following his killing by U.S. forces in Pakistan.
Al-Zawahiri was previously a senior member of Islamist organizations that led attacks in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe. In 2012, al-Zawahiri called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners in Muslim countries.
On July 31, 2022, a United States drone strike killed al-Zawahiri at a house in Kabul, Afghanistan.
