D-day was in No.2 Troop for the assault on Merville Battery Appointed IO (Information Officer) in Normandy to the Commander of Royal Engineers. While inspecting two abandoned tanks, Lt. Shand stepped on a chain of 75 grenades. He was killed in the explosion.

Family Notes: son of Lt. Col Norman Protheroe Shand MC (1886-1956) [of the Norfolk Regiment] and his wife Eva Margarita Thurburn (1887-1976)- [m.1916 Croydon, England]

His family lived in Salthouse, Norfolk.

His father was granted administration of his estate on 30 Dec 1944 at Llandudno, where Leslie Shand's home address was given as 251a Chesterton Road, Cambridge.
