Matthew Cogley, 30, who was found dead in the early hours of January 1, was the guitarist and singer with successful rock band Failsafe.

Failsafe - Only If We Learn

A rock musician whose band starred in an episode of TV sitcom The Inbetweeners died suddenly in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Matthew Cogley, 30, was the singer, guitarist and songwriter with alternative rock band Failsafe.

He appeared with his band in the Channel 4 comedy The Inbetweeners in 2010.

They were featured performing during the episode, The Gig and the Girlfriend, in the third series of the show, reports The Lancashire Telegraph.

Failsafe released three albums since forming in 2005 and have toured extensively in Britain, Europe and the USA.

Mr Cogley’s brother, Martin, said Matthew, from Chorley, Lancashire, had died suddenly in the early hours of Thursday in Belfast.

It is understood he had attended a wedding in Northern Ireland earlier in the week and had extended his stay to see in the New Year.

Martin informed friends of the tragedy in a post on Facebook.

He said: “My amazing brother passed away suddenly while in Belfast.

“We will miss him so much - beyond words can express - and we know that hundreds of other people in Chorley, around the country and across the world will feel the same way."

“Matthew was such a talented musician and songwriter. His music with band-mates Failsafe and his solo work was enjoyed by thousands of people.

“It’s going to take a long time to come to terms with our loss."

Fellow musician Seamus McLoughlin performed with Matthew on many occasions.

He said: “He was one of my best friends and my heart is completely broken.

“It all seems unreal. I’m trying to come to terms that I will never see him again or hear him sing one of his many beautiful songs.

“We played so many shows together and his musical experience was second to none due to his years of touring with his amazing band Failsafe."

Some highlights of Matthew’s musical career with Failsafe included performing at the SXSW Festival in Texas in 2010 and recording a live session at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios.

In 2008 the NME described Failsafe as a "genuinely killer live band with huge choruses and breakneck riffs" and in the same year Kerrang magazine gave them a full page feature.
