Willian Thiego de Jesus (22 July 1986 – 28 November 2016), known as William Thiego or simply Thiego, was a Brazilian central defender who played for Chapecoense. He was one of the victims when LaMia Airlines Flight 2933 crashed on 28 November 2016

Career

Sergipe

William Thiego started his career as a defender, playing for his hometown club Sergipe, and caught the eye of a Grêmio scout.

Grêmio

Thiego joined Grêmio in 2006, playing for the youth team. In 2007, he was promoted to the first squad and feature in both Campeonato Gaúcho and Campeonato Brasileiro in this year.

On 14 June 2008, he scored his first league goal, a powerful close-range shot, in a 3-0 away win against Goiás.

Thiego was sent on a one-year loan to Kyoto Sanga FC in January 2010.

Figueirense / Khazar Lankaran

On 16 January 2013, Thiego signed a one-year deal with Figueirense. Following the expiration of his Figueirense contract, Thiego signed an 18-month contract with Khazar Lankaran of the Azerbaijan Premier League on 27 January 2014. Thiego left Khazar Lankaran in December 2014, after having his contract cancelled by the club.

Chapecoense

In January 2015, William Thiego signed for Chapecoense.

Death

Thiego was one of 71 fatalities on 28 November 2016, when Chapecoense were on route to the first leg of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana Finals where they would play Atlético Nacional in Medellín.
