Mission-based career
Veikko Hynönen was a police officer by civilian profession.

He began composing chess problems in the 1940s. His first mission was published in Suomen Sosialidemokraati in 1950.  In the 1950s, he became involved in the activities of the Finnish Chess Problems Association ( Suomen Tehtaväniekat ). From 1958 to 1972 he was a member of the association's board. Hynönen was ST secretary from 1958-1962 and 1971-1972.

In 1978, Hynönen was awarded the title of national taskmaster for his artistic merits. In 1982, Hynönen wrote the collection "EAW" together with Matti Myllyniemi, in which the tasks of the international task master Erkki A. Wirtanen were presented.

Veikko Hynönen & Matti Myllyniemi: EAW. A selection of Erkki A. Wirtanen's chess problems . Helsinki: Suomen Tehtaväniekat, 1982. ISBN 951-95111-5-6 . 2nd edition of the work (2013) in online version (PDF) ( Archived - Internet Archive)
On 9 February 1985, Hynönen was awarded a Chess Merit Badge at the 50th anniversary meeting of the Finnish Missionaries. He died just under two weeks later, on 22 February 1985 in Helsinki. His last commission appeared in the magazine The Problemist in 1986.

Veikko Hynönen has prepared a total of 330 chess problems.  As a task master he was a very versatile author and his task production covers almost all areas of task chess equally. Hynönen prepared checkmate tasks, auxiliary checkmate, self-checkmate, finishing tasks and fairy chess tasks. As a draughtsman, he was interested in logical ideas and various strategic structures in his tasks.

According to Timo Kallio, Hynönen prepared many so-called logical checkmates with several moves.  A logical checkmate task requires at least three moves to work. Part of the structure of the logical task is that it contains a test for White, i.e. an experimental move that is cancelled by Black's move, and a special pre-action at the beginning of the solution. The purpose of the preliminary action is, for example, to force the black piece onto an unfavourable square (in the terminology of task chess this is called boarding).

A substantial part of Hynönen's tasks were created in co-operation with other authors. He prepared several tasks, e.g. with Veikko Tamminen (1916-92).

FIDE Master in chess composing
At the time of his death (1985), Hynöne had a total of 11.85 album points, based on the tasks published in the collections of world championship tasks, i.e. FIDE albums. 12 album points are required for the rank of FIDE Master in Drafts or FIDE Master in Task Chess. Tasks by him were published posthumously and he reached a point limit sufficient for the rank of FIDE Master. The title of FIDE Task Chess Master was awarded in 1992. According to the 2012 score, Hynö has a total of 12.83 album points.

After Hynönen's death, Matti Myllyniemi (1920-87) selected 72 tasks from his task production for the future task collection. Myllyniemi had time to finalise the first draft of the script and comment on the tasks. He also fixed and improved some missions. When he died, the work remained unfinished. The project was continued in 1990 by Jorma Paavilainen and Kari Valtonen, who finalised the manuscript. Teppo Mänttä checked the correctness of the tasks selected for the work and, if necessary, replaced the tasks that turned out to be incorrect with correct tasks. Suomen Tehtaväniekat published the work in 1991.

More about him can be read in this pdf at www.sci.fi.

It is presented in two languages: English and Finnish.

It reports about him:

He was a police-man by profession.

His first problem was published in "Suomen Sosialidemokraatti" in 1950

... and the last one posthumously in "The Problemist" in 1986.

His total output was 330 problems of all kinds. Of these 40 were composed jointly.

A chess composer of the strategis and logical school, he was not so much interested in modern ideas involving cyclic play and paradoxes.

During the years 1958-1972 he was a member of the board of The Finnish Chess Problem Society, acting as secretary in 1958-1962 and 1971-1972. [....]

He was awarded the title of National Master of Chess Composition in 1978.

About his endgame studies: He had composed high original endgame studies with much skill.
