Georg Heinrich Bernhardt (* 1 March 1892 in Veckerhagen; † 12 December 1964 in Bad Wildungen) was a German chess composer from Frankenau.
Chess Composition
Bernhardt published over 300 endgame studies from 1918 onwards. Strangely enough, his most widespread was repeatedly circulated as a fragment of a part. It was often reproduced with the names Pape - Roth, Papp - Roth and Peip - Roth, although it was allegedly played either in Löbau in 1924 or in Germany in 1972. Curiously, even the German Chess Federation printed the piece as a party position.
In reality, however, it was a chess study composition:
White to move and draw
White: Ke4, a4, d5, g3 (4) Black: Kd1, Bh2, d4, e7, h5 (5)
Solution 1. d5–d6 e7xd6
2. Ke4–d3! Bh2xg3
3. a4–a5 d6–d5
4. a5–a6 Bg3–b8
5. a6–a7 Bb8xa7 stalemate
