Luigi Centurini (Genoa, April 24, 1820 – † Genoa, November 10, 1900) was an Italian lawyer, chess player and significant chess composer of endgame studies (Zavatarelli 2015: 19)
In 1853 in Genoa he published the pamphlet entitled Giuoco degli Scacchi (Chess Game). The endgame of rook and knight against rook was a study that made him known worldwide. In 1865 he wrote a work on the "Gambit", which appeared in Eco della Scienza, but his studies are particularly concerned with the endgame. From 1856 to 1857 he collaborated with La Régence and The Chess Monthly. He corresponded with the most important chess theorists of his time.
Endgame studies and positions
Centurini was also the main analyst of the endgame of a bishop and a pawn against a bishop of the same color (Fine & Benko 2003:152). He established rules for when the position is won and when it is a draw (Müller & Lamprecht 2001:108).
