Frank Vincent Zappa (ur. 21 grudnia 1940 w Baltimore, zm. 4 grudnia 1993 w Los Angeles) – amerykański muzyk rockowy, jazzowy, wokalista, kompozytor oraz autor tekstów, lider zespołu „The Mothers of Invention”. Także aktor, reżyser, producent i scenarzysta filmowy.

Zajmował się muzyką od młodości. Obok rhythm and bluesa interesowała go współczesna muzyka poważna (promotorem jego twórczości w tej dziedzinie był John Adams). Około kwietnia 1964 wstąpił do zespołu „Soul Giants” i niedługo potem zmienił ich nazwę na „The Mothers of Invention”. Grupa ta istniała do 1971 i potem krótko w połowie lat 70. Nagrał dziesiątki płyt, zawierających muzykę rockową, poważną, pastisze przebojów muzyki popularnej, jazz rock i wiele innych. Bardzo apodyktyczny, narzucający innym swą wolę, ale też niezwykle inteligentny muzyk, gitarzysta-wirtuoz. Szydził z telekaznodziejów, reklamy, polityków, pozerów, cenzury, w ironiczny sposób ukazując życie w Ameryce. W jego zespole grali m.in. George Duke, Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, Adrian Belew, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jean-Luc Ponty, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Sugarcane Harris, Jeff Berlin, Aynsley Dunbar, Alex Dmochowski i Captain Beefheart. W swojej muzyce nie uznawał ograniczeń, sięgał do rocka, popu, soulu, współczesnej muzyki poważnej, jazzu, muzyki awangardowej, muzyki aleatorycznej, pastiszu, muzyki konkretnej, muzyki barokowej, renesansowej, neoromantycznej. Zmarł 4 grudnia 1993 roku na raka prostaty.

W 2003 został sklasyfikowany na 45. miejscu listy 100 najlepszych gitarzystów wszech czasów magazynu Rolling Stone.

Rodzina

W latach 1960-1964 jego żoną była Kathryn J. „Kay” Sherman. W 1967 ożenił się z Adelaide Gail Sloatman, z którą był do swojej śmierci. Mieli czworo dzieci: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan i Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen. Gail Zappa zarządzała biznesowo-muzycznym majątkiem rodzinnym prawnie ustawionym jako Zappa Family Trust aż do jej śmierci 8 października 2015 roku.
